Loofah is commonly known as an item used for exfoliating the skin. However, there are so many other uses for loofah. It is amazing how people around the world use this incredible plant based sponge in so many different ways.
What is it?
According to Wikipedia, the luffa, loofah, or lufah (from Arabic ????) are tropical and subtropical vines comprising the genus Luffa, the only genus of the subtribe Luffinae of the plant family Cucurbitaceae. The fruit of at least two species, Luffa acutangula and Luffa aegyptiaca (Luffa cylindrica), is grown, harvested before maturity, and eaten as a vegetable, popular in Asia and Africa.
The ripe, dried fruit is also the source of the loofah or plant sponge. Luffas are also used to make the soles of beach sandals.
Renew, Refresh and Rejuvenate!
Most everyone has at one point or another seen the straw colored sponge at a spa or in someone’s bathroom. The loofah sponge is a great way to exfoliate the skin (help shed dead skin cells). When you gently rub the exterior of the skin (upper epidermis) with the loofah it will remove dead skin cells and reveal a new layer of skin. This process leaves your skin fresh, clean and tight. Often people will use a loofah sponge with a detachable handle to clean your back or even to function as a back scratcher!
It’s All About Sole!
Loofah are often used in the soles of beach sandals. In luxury spas, loofah slippers are worn to help exfoliate feet with each step. They are also a “must-have” item for the beach and weekend trips!
Scrubber Ducky!
Loofah sponges can be shaped in just about any way you can think of. This scrubber ducky is a fun way to make bath time fun for kids!
Alternative Tool Scrubbing Glassware & Non-stick Pans
Loofah sponges can be cut down to use in place of steel wool pads or chemical laden sponges which are designed to remove grease and stains from food. Ideally, people opt to use loofah sponges on any sensitive surface that cannot withstand the harshness from commercially produced cleansing pads. They are a very inexpensive and sustainable way to clean up after a meal!
Arts and Crafts
Did you know that loofah sponges can be used in crafting as well? Loofah sponges are easy to cut and can be used to make dolls, Christmas ornaments, coasters, bracelets, placemats, and anything else your imagination can think of!
